Turn Hibernation Back On in Windows Vista

Posted on: 09.14.07 by Brent Trahan

Has your computer stopped hibernating all of a sudden? This guide shows why hibernation is sometimes turned off and how to turn hibernation back on in Windows Vista.

How Does Hibernation Get Turned Off

The most common causes I’ve come across when a computer suddenly stops hibernating are:

  • You delete the hibernation file (Hibernation File Cleaner) in Disk Cleanup.
  • Hybrid sleep is enabled.
  • Hibernation is disabled.

Turn Hibernation Back On

  1. Type cmd in the Start Menu’s search box.
  2. Right-click cmd.exe in the search results and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type powercfg /hibernate on in the command prompt and then press enter on your keyboard to run the command.
