This guide shows you how to prevent Windows Vista from automatically restarting after a STOP error (blue screen of death) occurs and to perform a complete memory dump.
Setting Windows Vista to not restart immediately after a STOP error makes it a little easier to trouble shoot the problem by being able to jot down the STOP errors that appear on the blue screen of death.
Performing a complete memory dump also makes advanced trouble shooting possible.
Setup System Failure Options
- Open Control Panel in the Start menu.
- Make sure the Control Panel is in Classic View by clicking Classic View in the left sidebar of the Control Panel.
- Open System.
- Click Advanced system settings in the left sidebar of the System window.
- Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section.
- Uncheck Automatically restart in the System failure section and change Kernel memory dump to Complete memory dump in the Write debugging information section.
- Click OK in the Startup and Recovery and System Properties windows to save the settings.
If a fatal error is preventing your computer from booting up you should boot the computer with the last known good configuration.
