Internet Explorer Favorites

The favorites section of Internet Explorer 7 is where you save your favorite websites for later viewing.  This guide shows you everything you need to know when using and organizing your favorites in Internet Explorer 7.

Pin or Not Pin

If you click the yellow star on the top left of the Internet Explorer 7 window the favorite’s window (shown below) will open un-pinned by default.

[1]

You can click the pin button (green arrow pointing left on the top right of the favorites window) to pin the favorites window on the left side of the Internet Explorer 7 window.  Pinning the favorite’s window on the left side of the window makes it where the favorite’s window is always showing.  People who use high resolution screens can use this feature.

The screen shot below shows the favorite’s window pinned.

If you don’t choose to pin the favorite’s window it will close as soon as you click a link in the favorite’s window.

If you want to un-pin the favorites window simply click the gray x at the top right of the favorites window.

Adding Favorites

There are two ways you can add favorites.  The first way is while you are on the page you want to add to your favorites click the + sign next to the yellow star.  Select add to favorites.

Give your favorite a name next to name.  If you want to save that favorite in a specific folder inside your favorites window drop down the create in window and select the folder you want to save it in.  If you need to create a new folder in your favorite’s window click the new folder button.

[3]

Give your folder a name in the folder name box.  If you want the new folder to be located in another folder already located in the favorites window drop down the create in box and select the folder you want to save it in.  Click create when you are finished.

The second way to add a favorite is to click the e or site graphic to the left of http://www… in the address bar with your left mouse button and while holding down your left mouse button drag the site to your favorites.

Organizing Favorites

Once you have lots of favorites you’ll need to organize them so that you can easily find them.  There are a few ways to perform the tasks I’m about to show you.  The way I’m about to show you is the easiest in my opinion.

Create a New Folder

You can create folders to organize your favorites into groups.  Click on any favorite or folder in the favorites section and select create new folder.  A new folder named new folder will appear.  You can give it a name while it’s highlighted or right-click the new folder and select rename.

Moving Things Around

You can easily move favorites or folders.  All you have to do is point to a link or folder you want to move, click it with your left mouse button and while holding down the left mouse button move the favorite or folder to the place you want to put it.

If you want to place something in a folder that is in a folder you have to move the favorite or link to the folder that the folder is in.  Try saying that three times fast.  When the folder expands, drop the favorite or folder in the folder it needs to go in.

Sorting

You can quickly sort favorites and folders in ABC order by right-clicking any folder or favorite and selecting sort by name.

If you want to sort favorites or folder that are within a folder you have to expand that folder (click on it so you can see what’s inside) and right-click a favorite or folder within that folder and select sort by name.

Deleting

To delete a favorite or folder simply right-click the favorite or folder you want to delete and select delete.

Misc. Features

You can open all the favorites within a folder at one time in one window by right-clicking that folder and select open in tab group.

To rename any favorite or folder simply right-click it and select rename.
