Change the Windows Vista Search Index Location

Learn how to change the location of Windows Vista’s search engine index.

Introduction

Windows Vista’s search engine keeps an index of files for fast advanced searching. If you have a fast spare hard drive and you have a huge search index you can speed up searching a bit by moving the search index to the faster hard drive.

Change the Vista Search Index Location

  1. Type index in the search box on the Start Menu.
  2. Click Indexing Options in the search results.
  3. Click Advanced.

  4. Click Select new.

  5. Browse to the new location of the search index using the arrows to the left of the folders.

    Click OK when you’re done.

  6. Restart your computer.
