Assign Two IP Addresses to One Network Connection

Posted By Brent Trahan On April 10, 2008 @ 1:11 pm In All, Networking, Vista, Windows | No Comments

Let’s say you have a laptop that you use at work and at home. When you use your laptop at work it uses a static IP address assigned by your IT department. When you go home your network uses a dynamic IP address assigned by a router.

This guide shows you how to assign two sets of IP settings to one network connection so that you don’t have to manually change these settings at each location.

Assign Two IP Settings to One Network Connection

  1. Click the Start orb and then open the Control Panel.
  2. Click Classic View on the left side of the Control Panel.
  3. Open the Network and Sharing Center.
  4. Click Manage Network Connections on the left side of Network and Sharing Center.
  5. Double-click the network connection you want to assign two IP settings to.

    [1]

  6. Click Properties.

    [2]

  7. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4.

    [3]

  8. We’ll assume these settings will be the default or connection one. In my case it is the DHCP settings for my home network.

    [4]

  9. To add a second set of IP settings click the Alternate Configuration tab.
  10. Set the second set of IP settings for this network connection. In my case it is a static IP address give by the IT department.

  11. Click OK in the Internet Protocol Version 4 window.
  12. Click OK in the Network Connection Properties window.
  13. Click Close in the Network Connection Status window.

Now the network connection is set up with two sets of IP settings (or two IP addresses).
